The rooftop chase

Chaplin shot this the same year he was fighting to keep the film out of a bankruptcy settlement entirely, re-editing it in secret and smuggling the negative to Utah in a fruit truck. The chase reads as pure slapstick, but it comes right after a scene of the Tramp genuinely sobbing on a doorstep -- the tonal whiplash was the whole point.
