John Barrymore did his own first transformation with zero special effects, hunching and twisting his face into Hyde live in front of the camera; the makeup only got more elaborate in later scenes, once the character had further to fall. Often called the first great American horror film, it set the template every Jekyll-and-Hyde adaptation since has been measured against.
